The holidays can be a wild time for everyone, between making lots of dishes, hosting parties, and getting the ‘right’ gift for your family members. But, having special holiday traditions can create meaningful memories and make the holiday season a little ✨brighter.✨
Here at Yellow Lime, we wanted to share our own holiday traditions with our families. From childhood traditions to new ones with our kids, we love having these special moments with our families.

We love watching Christmas movies!! Some of our favorites are Home Alone, Elf, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. We also usually do a Lego advent calendar every year (usually Star Wars themed). ⭐
We have four "magic elves" (from before Elf on the Shelf was a thing) that hide each night the week leading up to Christmas, and then show up with the Santa presents on Christmas morning.
Fun story: Matt grew up with colored lights on his tree, and I grew up with white lights. The colored lights give a moody, chill feel, but the white lights are bright and happy, and you can see the ornaments. For the first, like, 8 years of our marriage we would trade off every other year and whoever didn't have their favorite lights was unhappy. Until I finally realized I could put both on and it would be perfect. It's double the work, but it looks so great and it's worth it. 🎄

We always put up our Christmas tree right after Halloween. We try to wait for the first snowfall but it doesn't always happen 😆
Our kids are little so we're still figuring out our traditions but some of our favorite holiday things are:
- Picking out new PJs leading up to Christmas
- Baking and decorating cookies and delivering them to friends and neighbors. 🍪
- Watching Christmas movies with popcorn and hot cocoa on Christmas Eve. ☕
- Fresh cinnamon rolls and bacon on Christmas morning 🥓

Growing up, my family would do the “pickle on the Christmas tree” tradition. 🥒 My parents would hide a pickle ornament on the tree the night before, and my brother and I would have to find it Christmas morning. Whoever won got a prize! (I won every year for multiple years, so my brother eventually refused to play anymore).
On Christmas morning, my parents would always get my brother and me specialized ornaments for the year. It would usually reflect something special that had happened that year. It’s a fun tradition that I’m excited to continue with my future kids. 😊
My other favorite tradition is matching Christmas pajamas and eating charcuterie for Christmas Eve dinner. My mom never wanted to cook a big meal with just the four of us, since we would always cook a big meal with extended family. I loved having a “snacky dinner,” as we called it when I was a kid.
